If you are looking to make a little extra cash and you can’t find an easy way to make money on the side, you may be wondering how to get a raise. Sometimes, you can work really hard and not achieve any results. Getting an increase in pay isn’t as simple as merely putting in extra effort. It’s all about being strategic with what you do. If you are intentional and play your cards correctly, you can be earning a higher salary at your current job in no time. Here are some tips that have proven to work for me in the past:
Stay alert of Open Positions: If you are waiting to get a raise without increasing your responsibilities, you may be waiting a long time. One tried and true way of increasing your income is to be on the look out for either new positions that are created or existing positions that open up. Moving up on the ladder is the easiest way to increase your income. A general rule of thumb is that with more responsibilities, you will have a higher income.
Make Yourself Irreplaceable: Another way of making yourself the recipient of extra money is to develop a trade or skill set that will set you apart from everyone else. Whether that means taking a night class or just doing some reading on a special topic, finding something that you are good at is always a great option for getting a raise. When it comes to promote someone, the people who stand out will be considered first. Don’t be the person who just stays put their entire career. Motivate yourself to do something unique.
Socialize: This may sound ridiculous, but this also works. Upper managers like to work with people that they can relate to. They may not list this as a qualification on paper, but believe me, it happens all the time. My boss finally admitted to me that one of the things that put me over the other applicants is that he felt that he and I related better than he and the other applicants. By putting in the extra effort to socialize with your supervisor, you could be opening up future career opportunities that you don’t even realize.
